Following a few simple guidelines can make for an easy process when applying for a U.S. Green Card. A green card can be applied for through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Office also known as USCIS. This office is a branch through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, therefore many rules and regulations exist.

To apply for a U.S. Green card, you should first decide which situation best pertains to you. You can apply by Consular Processing or Adjustment of Status.

Consular Processing means you can apply for a visa to travel to the United States while in your home country. Submit this type of application to your nearest U.S. Consulate office. You must be able to show proof that you are the beneficiary of an approved immigrant petition. You must also provide an immigration visa number with your application.

Adjustment of Status is for individuals already living in the United States. This allows you to apply and obtain a green card without having to return to your original country of birth.

Many requirements and eligibility factors can help you decide which documentation you need to submit. Obtaining a green card through your employer or by marriage to a U.S. citizen are reasons to file for Adjustment of Status. You can also apply for Adjustment of Status if you have a child born on U.S. soil, or if you have a family member currently living as a U.S. citizen. Adjustment of Status can also be used to apply for refugee status; through this, you could be granted permanent residence.

The USCIS office will only accept legal copies of their forms. You can call and order the forms directly from them or by downloading them from their website.

The forms must have a signature and be completed in black ink.

You are required to show proof of your criminal history before a green card can be granted. With your completed application, you also need to include a legal copy of your birth certificate, a set of fingerprints, and two recent passport photos. You should also include an affidavit of support or a financial statement showing you have means to support yourself while in the United States.

Medical records and vaccine history records are also required.
